SAT Area and Volume study notes
Draw the shape and label every length before choosing a formula. Area measures a flat region in square units; volume measures space in cubic units. In composite shapes, split the picture into familiar parts or subtract a missing piece.
Worked example
A rectangular box is 5 by 3 by 4 units. What is its volume?
Multiply all three dimensions: 5 × 3 × 4 = 60 cubic units. Multiplying only two would give an area, not a volume.
