SAT Words in Context: let the passage choose the meaning
The rule
Choose the meaning that fits what the word does in this passage. Read the surrounding details, then substitute your choice back into the sentence.
Worked example
A museum guide adds definitions and simple diagrams. Teachers call it more accessible to beginners. What does accessible mean here?
- Identify the obstacle: beginners do not already know the technical terms.
- Definitions and diagrams help them comprehend the same information.
- Accessible therefore means easy to understand. Check that meaning in the original sentence.
A common trap
Easy to locate is a real meaning of accessible, but nothing in this passage says the guide was hard to find. A dictionary meaning can still be wrong in context.
Apply it, then revisit it
Try the skill in a separate question. After checking your answer, explain the step you used and return to any mistake later.
